The UK Environmental Data Index (UKEDI) is a searchable meta-information system containing details on UK environmental datasets and the data centres which manage them. UKEDI has been developed as part of the Environmental Diagnostics Programme, a Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) thematic research programme.
Objectives
The UK's investment in environmental data collection and observing systems is very high. Data on air, water and land quality are dispersed across the UK in databases and collections maintained by many different government departments and agencies, local and regional authorities, university departments, institutes, laboratories, data centres and private companies. Collectively, these data represent a huge resource for studying the UK environment. UKEDI provides a searchable directory of information about these datasets and how to gain access to them.
The UKEDI aims to address the problems of knowing what data exist, where they are located and how to gain access by providing users with a simple means for identifying sources of environmental data on air, water and land quality. The creation of a unified environmental data inventory - an environmental data "yellow pages" - will improve awareness.
Web Interface
The UKEDI web interface provides a facility for querying the UKEDI catalogue using free text or advanced searches. The interface also allows authorised users to submit new records or to modify existing records.
Authorised Users
These are Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) staff, or the staff members from collaborating University Departments or agencies.
